SYRIZA MP slams use of tear gas at foreclosure protest

The use of tear gas by riot police against protesters reacting to foreclosure auctions in an Athens courthouse on Wednesday was an act of “criminal negligence,” an MP with ruling SYRIZA has said.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, leftist lawmaker Giorgos Kyritsis answers as to why such an extreme measure was adopted by police holding back dozens of protesters trying to prevent auctions from proceeding after a hiatus of several months.

“The use of chemicals in an enclosed space is objectionable,” Kyritsis said. “In the case that this happened, and I have to reason to doubt it, it is a case of criminal negligence… for which the Ministry of Citizens’ Protection needs to give an immediate explanation.”

“I do rule out that an order was given for chemicals to be used in a enclosed space,” Kyritsis added.
