Parents of dead university student challenge coroner’s findings

The parents of a 21-year-old student who was found dead on the southeast Aegean island of Kalymnos last month filed a homicide suit on Monday at Hellenic Police headquarters in Athens against persons unknown.

The parents have called into question the conclusions of the coroner who conducted the autopsy on Nikos Hatzipavlou’s battered body and ruled his death an accident.

The coroner said the young man died of injuries and exposure after having survived for hours and possibly days after falling from a great height. He also surmised that Hatzipavlou’s body may have been swept to the location where it was found by floodwaters after strong rains.

His body was discovered almost a week after he had been reported missing. The discovery had initially prompted police to investigate the possibility of homicide, as it was found at a spot that had already been checked by search-and-rescue teams.
