Three beaches reopen on island hit by oil spill
Three beaches on the island of Salamina in the Saronic Gulf, which were heavily polluted following the recent oil spill, were reopened on Tuesday.
The beaches had been closed since the Agia Zoni II tanker sank off the island on September 10, leaking fuel oil into the sea.
“Today, we are handed back the beaches in a cleaner state than they were before,” said Shipping Minister Panayiotis Kouroublis. “Top-quality work has been carried out.”
The Hellenic Center for Marine Research is due to inform Parliament on Friday about the results of recent tests it has carried out on water quality in the Saronic Gulf.
Kouroublis claimed that the results are good. He added, however, that announcements regarding whether the sea is safe for swimming will be made by the Health Ministry.
