MPs to question Kammenos over Saudi Arabia arms deal

Defense Minister Panos Kammenos is due to appear before Parliament’s Military Contracts Committee on Friday to respond to questions about the stalled deal to sell ammunition to Saudi Arabia.

A number of SYRIZA MPs, including two members of the panel, have asked for the agreement with Riyadh to be torn up after accusations from the opposition that Kammenos tried to involve a middleman in a deal that the Saudis wanted to negotiate directly with Athens.

New Democracy has also submitted a request for Kammenos, as well as Alternate Defense Minister Dimitris Vitsas and Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias, to appear before Parliament’s Institutions and Transparency Committee in connection with the same matter.

Conservative MP Giorgos Koumoutsakos also submitted a question in Parliament for Kotzias. The lawmaker wants to know if the Foreign Ministry followed the correct procedures for authorizing the signing of the deal in June.
