Greek Olympians launch campaign for return of Parthenon Marbles

TAGS: Protest, Culture

In a bid to draw attention to Greece’s longstanding demand for Britain to return the Parthenon Marbles, a group of Greek Olympians has launched an unusual campaign, planning to stage a protest inside the British Museum, where the Marbles are housed, dressed as caryatids.

The protest is to be led by the president of the Hellenic Olympians Association, water polo player Voula Kozoboli, as well as the HOA’s vice president Evi Moraitidou (who won a silver in water polo in 2004), Voula Zygouri (a wrestler) and Eirini Aindili (who won a bronze medal for rhythmic gymnastics in 2000).

“Since antiquity, sports have been irrevocably linked to culture,” Kozoboli said.

“The time has come for Olympians to unite their voices with others and demand the return to Greece of our stolen heritage,” she said.
