Fire in Patission Street building brought under control; no injuries

A large fire in an abandoned building on Patission Street near Pedion tou Areos park was put out without incident on Monday morning, but did force police to close down a part of the busy thoroughfare, causing traffic jams in parts of the city center.

The fire service said that an inspection of the property confirmed that there were no deaths or injuries from the blaze, as the building does not appear to have been used as a temporary shelter or squat.

It took a force of 30 firefighters in 10 trucks to bring the early morning blaze under control before it could spread to adjacent buildings, though the neighboring apartment block was evacuated as a precaution.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire.
