Eastern Attica coast hit by cluster of small tremors

A cluster of small tremors, with the biggest measuring just 2.7 on the Richer scale, was recorded in eastern Attica on Tuesday morning, though seismologists appear confident this is not a precursor to a bigger event.

The Athens-based Geodynamic Institute recorded 18 minor earthquakes within 12 hours by around 10 a.m. along or just off the region’s eastern coast, between the towns of Rafina and New Makri.

“It is a cluster and we are watching the phenomenon,” seismologist and Earthquake Risk Assessment Committee member Gerasimos Houliaras told the ANA-MPA news agency.

“Historically, this is an area that has never produced a strong earthquake,” he added.
