Detonator ‘courier’ linked to Koropi murder

Police in Athens believe that an Afghan man arrested on unrelated charges may be responsible for the December 15 murder of a 71-year-old shepherd in Koropi, eastern Attica.

The victim had been shot in the head with a hunting rifle and was found dead in a sheep pen he had rented in the area.

According to a police announcement on Friday, forensic evidence at the scene of the crime has allegedly linked an Afghan man who was arrested in downtown Athens last month carrying more than 70 detonators and other bomb-making material in a backpack.

The suspect is thought to have been acting as a courier for an anarchist group running a squat were he was found to be living.

The Afghan man had applied for asylum in Greece and spent time at various migrant centers around the country prior to his arrest.

In his application, he claims to be 19 years old, though investigating officers place his age at above 30.
