Police on standby for Europa League game after Rouvikonas statement

Greek police say they are on high alert for Thursday’s Europa League match in the Greek capital  between AEK Athens and visiting Dynamo Kiev after the Rouvikonas anti-establishment group issued a statement condemning the Ukrainian team’s fans as “fascists of the Right Sector,” a far-right Ukrainian nationalist political party and movement.

“Their presence is a provocation to the anti-fascist world,” said a statement on the indymedia website by the group that has recently stepped up its attacks on political and business targets.

“The organized fans of Dynamo Kiev form the core of the armed paramilitary groups of the Right Sector,” it added, and called on anti-fascist soccer fans in the stands at Thursday’s match to “stand up”to the group that also has ties to Greece’s Golden Dawn.
