Parliament speakers to discuss ballots on Novartis affair
Parliament speakers were to meet on Tuesday afternoon to determine the procedure for Wednesday's debate and vote in the House on whether there should be a parliamentary probe into allegations that 10 Greek politicians accepted bribes from Swiss drugs manufacturer Novartis.
The debate is to start at 9 a.m. with a vote expected late at night once several MPs and the party leaders have spoken in what is expected to be a highly tense session.
The majority of House speakers have proposed that there be 10 separate votes for each of the politicians mentioned in the prosecutors' report.
However the main conservative opposition New Democracy objects to this prospect, accusing the government of attempting to create "show" to denigrate is political rivals, and has indicated that it might boycott the votes.
