Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed ongoing negotiations to settle the name dispute between Athens and Skopje, Turkey’s provocative activity in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean, and relations between Ankara and the European Union, reports said Tuesday.

During their phone conversation, Tsipras reportedly stressed the need for a solution to the name row with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), along with changes to the Balkan state’s constitution, while emphasizing that Turkey’s respect for international law is a condition for strengthening its ties with the EU bloc.

Tsipras and Merkel are expected to meet again on the sidelines of the EU summit in Brussels on Friday.

On Wednesday, Merkel is scheduled to meet with FYROM PM Zoran Zaev in Berlin.
