Merkel reassures Tsipras of support regarding Turkish aggression in Aegean

German Chancellor Angela Merkel reportedly told Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras that Berlin's support is "clear and self-evident" when he raised the issue of Turkish aggressions in the Aegean on Friday on the sidelines of a European Union leaders' summit in Brussels.

Merkel said the cooperation between the EU and Turkey in curbing illegal immigration was effective but stressed that it was important that there are no tensions in the Aegean, according to the Athens-Macedonia news agency.

During talks between Tsipras, Merkel, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, it was agreed that EU-Turkish cooperation in the migration crackdown is effective but must be intensified.

It was agreed that the EU and Berlin would provide support in the form of infrastructure and manpower to boost border controls while the EC will bolster efforts to accelerate the processing of asylum applications.
