Court turns down Turkish extradition request for left-wing ‘terrorist’

An Athens court on Tuesday turned down a fresh request for the extradition of one of nine men arrested in November on suspicion of belonging to a Turkish far-left militant group.

Judges at the Athens Appeals Court upheld an argument by prosecutor Ourania Stathea that the suspect may be tried in Turkey on charges other than those listed in the arrest warrant backing the extradition request.

Naci Ozpolat, 48, a Turkish citizen of Kurdish origin, is wanted by Turkey on charges of assisting a terrorist organization and was arrested in Greece last November along with another eight suspects over alleged links to the outlawed Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP/C).

Ozpolat is also facing charges in Greece over an alleged attempt by DHKP/C to transfer arms and explosives from the eastern Aegean island of Chios to Turkey in 2013.
