Rally planned in Lesvos to demand closing of overcrowded migrant camp

A labor center on the island of Lesvos said on Thursday that it will hold a protest rally at the port of Mytilene on February 7 to demand the closing of the overcrowded migrant reception center at Moria, the transfer of refugees to the mainland and the improvement of living conditions at all refugee and migrant centers.

The rally in Sapphous Square is scheduled to start at 6.30 p.m.

Speaking during a meeting of local groups on Wednesday, the president of the Thodoris Aslanidis Workers’ Center hailed the support locals have provided to refugees arriving on the island since the European migrant crisis erupted in 2015, and welcomed an initiative on the island of Samos to hold a similar protest on the same day.

He also called on the islanders to isolate those who cultivate hatred toward migrants and refugees.
