Vulnerable system
Unfortunately, the recent revelations that have emerged from the ongoing investigation into the criminal gang operating at Korydallos maximum-security prison – the largest in the country – should not come as a surprise to anyone.
The spate of murders that have taken place inside the prison (and related ones outside) suggest the operation of organized criminal networks.
However, the fact that law enforcement officials managed to identify and break up one of these networks is of course something to take comfort from. But this alone is simply not enough to bring changes to Greek prisons.
However, the unraveling of this one network could prompt a sweeping overhaul and a redesign of Greece’s troubled and vulnerable penitentiary system from scratch.
