Kurd dies in packed truck on ferry to Italy

A Kurdish illegal immigrant has been found dead, apparently of suffocation, on a Greek ferry that docked in the Italian port of Ancona, the Merchant Marine Ministry said on Saturday. Italian authorities discovered the corpse on Friday. The victim had been packed into a Dutch truck with another 12 migrants and brought to Ancona by ferry from Igoumenitsa, the ministry said. The other 12 migrants, two of whom had suffered severe dehydration, were hospitalized in Ancona. The men, all Kurds, had been concealed in a special compartment of the small truck. The driver of the truck, whose nationality was not revealed, is being detained, the ministry said. On Saturday, the coast guard intercepted a total of 17 illegal immigrants in the Aegean – nine on Lesvos and eight on the islet of Farmakonisi, near Leros in the Dodecanese.
