President, PM go solar behind green initiative

Greece’s two most senior political figures, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and President Karolos Papoulias, will install solar panels in their official residences as a means of promoting the environmentally friendly energy source, the development ministry said yesterday. The proposal was initially put forward last week by the environmental group Greenpeace, which called on Karamanlis to switch the Maximos Mansion in central Athens to solar energy to serve as a good example for the rest of the country. The Greek Parliament will also make the change. «The possibility of electrical energy production via this new method will contribute in future to a better quality of life and an improvement to the environment while also saving energy,» said Parliament Speaker Anna Psarouda-Benaki.
