Ostriches in mood for love due to warm spell

The unseasonably warm weather over the last few weeks has been welcomed by some, but it seems that the high temperatures have wreaked havoc on ostriches in northern Greece which are looking to mate some three months earlier than usual. Workers at an ostrich-breeding farm in Hortiatis, near Thessaloniki, told Kathimerini that the springlike weather had put the male ostriches in a frisky mood, much to the concern of the female birds which have mostly tried to reject the advances of the males. Staff at the farm said that in some cases the ostriches have mated successfully and the females have even begun to lay eggs. Mating season for ostriches in Greece usually begins around March and lasts up to six months, depending on the weather.
