Old, rare glimpses of Kastoria

A woman posing for Leonidas Papazoglou. A series of black-and-white portraits by the noted photographer are currently on display in Kastoria.

A deeply sensitive man who caught the spirit of a society in transition, namely that of the northern Greek city of Kastoria in early 20th century, Leonidas Papazoglou is considered a recent “discovery” enriching the history of Greek photography.

The photographer’s work had been found by George Golobias, a collector who died recently and who left his home city, Kastoria, a part of its cultural identity.

Initially displayed at the Benaki Museum, Papazoglou’s photographs are currently being showcased in Kastoria, as selected by the Photography Museum of Thessaloniki, which is in charge of the Leonidas Papazoglou archive.

The exhibition “Leonidas Papazoglou: Photographic Portraits from Kastoria and its Vicinity at the Time of the Macedonian Struggle” is on at the Vergos Mansion (12 Aiditras, Vergouladika) to December 31.

Thanks to the contribution of Golobias, audiences today have the chance to view life in Kastoria before the city was reunited with the rest of Greece.

This particular exhibition presents black-and-white photos, primarily portraits of the region’s inhabitants and military men.
