Jazz star rising over Papagou

Georgia-born Lizz Wright will be in Athens for two performances.

A rising star on the world’s jazz scene, Lizz Wright is a versatile artist, both in her singing as well as her songwriting. The American vocalist is scheduled to appear at the Papagou Garden Theater tonight and tomorrow.

Born in Hahira, Georgia, to a minister father and a mother who sang gospel at church, as a young girl Wright played the piano and sang at church services. She went on to study at Georgia State University in Atlanta, before attending New York’s New School and moving to Vancouver. Back in Atlanta she joined local band In The Spirit, before earning recognition from critics as a member of a traveling homage to Billie Holiday.

In 2003, her debut album “Salt” made international headlines, and was followed by “Dreaming Wide Awake” in 2005. Wright’s third album, “The Orchard,” reflects her personal journey, with songs like “Coming Home” and “Another Angel.” In the album, the artist explores rhythm ’n’ blues as well as her contralto voice.
