President Karolos Papoulias once again set an example with his presence at the opening of the Special Olympics last Monday at Athens's Peace and Friendship Stadium where he was accompanied by his wife May, and with a number of government and parliamentary officials in attendance. There were 2,007 athletes present from all over Greece and Cyprus at this, the 20th anniversary of the event in Greece. Also present were Piraeus Mayor Panayiotis Fasoulas, Marathon Mayor Spyros Zagaris, representatives of the armed forces leadership and Elpida Foundation President Marianna Vardinoyianni. The evening culminated in a celebration for all those present and their families.
