Iakovides work goes under the hammer for record price at Sotheby’s sale in London

‘Grandpa’s New Pipe’ went for 664,535 euros.

Giorgos Iakovides, Constantinos Vola-nakis, Nikolaos Gyzis, Diamantis Diamantopoulos, Constantinos Parthenis, Giorgos Bouzianis and Theophilos are some of the names that occupied the top 10 places in the recent Greek Sale that took place at Sotheby’s in London on April 17.

New artist record

To be more specific, Iakovides’s “Grandpa’s New Pipe,” earned first place, going under the hammer for 664,535 euros. This is in fact a record sale for this artist at an auction.

The following three top spots were taken by works by Volanakis: “Along the Coast” reached 529,259 euros, “Along the Coast – Volos” fetched 414,450 euros, while “Sunset Over a Greek Port” was sold at 400,557 euros.

Tied in fifth and sixth place were Gyzis’s “Mother and Child” and “Seated Greek Sergeant” by Diamantis Diamantopoulos. Both paintings sold at 342,998 euros, with Diamantopoulos’s work also reaching a record sale for the artist.

In seventh place came Parthenis with “A Tree-Lined Road” – this painting went under the hammer for 342,112 euros, followed by Volanakis and the artist’s “Ships Arriving at Port,” sold at 328,112 euros. The work of Bouzianis titled “Girl with Hat” fetched 313,226 euros. The final two top 10 slots were also a tie – at 298,340 euros: “Karaiskakis at the Battle of Faliron, April 22, 1826” by Theophilos (Hadjimichail) and yet another work by Volanakis (and the fifth piece in the top 10), “Harbour of Volos by Moonlight.”

Demonstrating once again the increasing interest in Greek works of art sold on an international level, the total turnover of the London auction reached a staggering 11,866,665 euros.
