POCKET KNIVES: (From the column «An Athenian's Notes») At a kiosk where I often buy cigarettes I often look over the showcase of pocket knives for sale. I don't know if any other object is sold in such a variety of shapes and sizes as that small male accessory. Strangely enough, very few members of the female sex have in their handbags an implement of this kind that is so useful for a number of purposes. In fact, there are many men who always have a small knife on their person, even if they never use it. They are made in just about every country. While some pocket knives are these days more like an entire tool kit, in past years their handle was often a work of art, usually representing some figure. In the years following the Greek War of Independence, the wooden handles of these knives were carved to depict the face of the hero Theodoros Kolokotronis. Since then, these knives have been known in Greece by his name. GRIVAS FOR MAKARIOS: Nicosia, 13 - General Georgios Grivas, the former leader of the resistance in Cyprus, today urged the people of the island to rally around Archbishop Makarios and «help him fulfill his difficult mission.»
