POCKETKNIVES: (From the column “An Athenian’s Notes”) At a kiosk where I often buy cigarettes, I frequently look over the glass case of pocketknives for sale. I don’t know if any other object is sold in such a variety of shapes and sizes as that small male accessory. Strangely enough, very few of the female sex carry in their handbags an implement of this kind that is so useful for a number of purposes. In contrast, there are many men who always have a small knife on their person, even if they never use it. GREECE-USA: London – The Athens correspondent for The Times has reported that US President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s visit to Greece coincides with a sensitive phase in the two nations’ bilateral relations, following Greece’s rejection of a US demand to increase the range of the Voice of America’s transmitter in Rhodes and reports of an imminent reduction in US aid to Greece. PLANE CRASH: A Dakota passenger aircraft, Olympic Airways Flight 215, crashed on October 29 near Avlona, north of Athens, shortly after taking off for Thessaloniki. None of the 15 passengers or three crew members aboard survived. The residents of Avlona reported hearing one or two explosions as the plane passed overhead.
