The restrictions for trucks traveling on Greece’s national highways were introduced in the wake of deadly accidents that shocked the public. Similarly, other European states have banned trucks from tunnels for safety reasons.

Easing those restrictions is a bad omen. We are about to witness a peculiar bargaining between truck owners and state officials, in which union demands could lead to longer truck hours on highways. Safety will thus be traded for higher haulage charges.

The government must meet its safety-first promise by rejecting demands that could endanger driver safety.
