Extended power shortages throughout the country and the threat of a torrent of garbage have pushed Greeks beyond their limits. They have also made us think about the limits of unionist demands. Certain categories of workers trying to achieve their demands by whatever means they deem necessary do not punish their employers, but society at large.

Energy, water resources and public sanitation are foremost social commodities and national resources. It is an act of violence for those who manage these commodities to hold society hostage so they can ensure that the interests of their guilds are ensured. No one has the right to keep these from the public; no one has the right to assert their right for special benefits or permanency by threatening public health and safety.

Throughout its history, the union movement has been a pioneer in ensuring social cohesion. The turn that the movement has taken over the past few weeks, however, works against unity and equality, it undermines social solidarity and targets the weaker social strata. Social responsibility is being crushed by the guild mentality.
