Protecting our environment

Greece stands out for its poor management of the environment as it does in so many other spheres.

While most countries across the world have suffered from unchecked industrial development, in Greece the most damage has been caused by small property owners, who are responsible for most illegal buildings, and small factories.

The above fact is proof of the bankruptcy of Greece’s political system. Small property creates that critical political mass that can put pressure on governments to legitimize environmental damage.

The goverment’s decision to carve out a national zoning plan is a welcome one, but it is not enough to reverse the current situation.

Protection of the natural environment is a national priority and calls for cross-party action. Greek parties across the left-right spectrum must join hands and agree on a common platform to tackle the environmental challenges.

Wrongdoing must be punished regardless of what party is in power and whether we are in a pre-election period.
