One of the previous administration’s greatest achievements was its legislation regarding tertiary education. It did not go as far as needed to fully resolve the problems, but was certainly a major step forward. To pass the law, the government had to confront vested interests.

So it would be a pity if the reforms were not completed out of a fear of how those same vested interests will react. The government has to move quickly to implement its legislation and complete the reforms.

Cabinet members should not forget that the demand for change in tertiary education goes beyond partisan interests and that it has the support of politicians, university faculties and other groups that are anything but friendly to the ruling New Democracy party.

The prime minister never tires of reminding us that education is the foundation of the country’s social and economic growth. That message should be driven home and the only way to achieve that purpose is to continue foward with the reforms.
