A strike with little or no point at all
The social security reform bill has finally been passed by the Greek Parliament. In the meantime, the socialist opposition proposal to hold a national referendum on the issue has been rejected by the majority of MPs. Now, the conservative administration of New Democracy must enforce this new piece of legislation. The relevant obligation is set out in the Constitution. In view of this, the ongoing strike of Bank of Greece employees will serve no union objectives, but simply create problems for the country’s citizens. On account of the strike, commercial banks are forced to borrow abroad at high rates, while many are unable to pay wages and pensions because of a lack of cash. The strike has exceeded the time and aims for which it was launched. Employees have nothing to gain from the ongoing action, whereas their fellow citizens have a great deal to lose. And as a result, they have every right to be upset.
