Time to claim our cities back
The cities of Greece have become unbearable places to live. There’s nowhere to walk. Sidewalks are dirty and narrow and are under siege. Parents cannot take their children out in their strollers. Wheelchair-bound individuals are imprisoned in their own homes because they can’t move about outside. The elderly are at the mercy of traffic. Municipal authorities and the traffic police are mere observers of the unlawfulness that has created this situation. Every resident of the capital city should come together today and protest on Academias Street. We must all demand that the space that has been robbed from us be returned. We have to reclaim those sidewalks that have been blocked by selfish drivers and cafe owners, with their tables and chairs. And we must demand an end to motorcycles being allowed to turn pedestrian walkways into high-speed thoroughfares or parking lots. Today the citizens of Greece’s cities are demanding justice. Someone, sometime, must finally listen to them.
