Illegal immigration is one of the biggest problems facing the world today and presents a serious challenge for Greece, the nearest gateway to the European Union for people in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Greece is therefore well justified in asking its European peers for their assistance in tackling the problem.

In the meantime, international organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union have repeatedly underscored the tragic shortcomings (if not willful ignorance) of the Greek authorities in their handling of illegal migrants who have been arrested and are awaiting deportation.

The state promised to improve its record in this area, but so far has opened only two new reception centers.

Yesterday’s front-page story in the International Herald Tribune, titled “Migrant waves raise pressure on Greece,” showed how much of an injustice the authorities’ foot-dragging has done to the renowned Greek hospitality.
