CYPRIOT STRUGGLE: Nicosia – Hordes of Turks vandalized property owned by Greek Cypriots yesterday in Famagusta with the cooperation of the British authorities, resulting in the death of one Cypriot and the injury of 10 more, including four women. The Cypriot Struggle Political Committee (PEKA, the political wing of the National Cypriot Fighters’ Organization, EOKA) has called for a general strike in protest, which has already begun and is to end at midnight today. Meanwhile a British soldier was killed (the 100th Briton and 77th soldier since the beginning of the EOKA uprising in 1955) and another was injured when the vehicle in which they were traveling was ambushed... According to all reports, the Turks’ vandalism has been instigated by the British in the hope that it will further their plans to divide the island. GREEKS OF EGYPT: Cairo – According to Reuters, leaders of the Greek community in Egypt have informed President Gamal Abdel Nasser of their “bitterness and concern” at the nationalization of banks, insurance companies and trade organizations. The Greek-language newspaper “Light” reports that these laws are a fatal blow to the majority of Greeks in Egypt.
