PAPAGOS: The country’s political problem is rapidly moving toward a solution (Ed. note: Later that night the prime minister, Field Marshal Alexandros Papagos, died after a long illness). Over the past 48 hours there have been several developments. Prime Minister Papagos sent a letter to the king, informing him of his decision to appoint an acting prime minister and that within two to three days he would announce the name of the person he would be assigning to the post. Secondly, the most likely person to stand in for Papagos is Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr Stephanos Stephanopoulos. Meanwhile the minister without portfolio, Mr Emmanouil Tsouderos, submitted his resignation, expressing his complete devotion to the prime minister and stating that he would assist the Greek Rally Party in every way possible. THE CHURCH: Archbishop Spyridon of Athens visited Foreign Minister Stephanos Stephanopoulos yesterday. VOULPIOTIS SENTENCED: Ioannis Voulpiotis has been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for slandering the coordination minister, Mr Constantine Papaconstantinou, over the Siemens affair.
