COUNCIL OF EUROPE ON CYPRUS: Paris, 4 – Following its latest sessions in Strasbourg, the Council of Europe has asked the British government to halt all executions of Cypriot patriots as part of its emergency measures on the island. It also recommended that a Council of Europe delegation visit the island to make an on-the-spot investigation into allegations of torture. The British government has been given until July 20 to reply. The Council’s decision is based on a report from its subcommittee on human rights, whose members have completed their examination of an appeal from Greece regarding human rights abuses by the British in Cyprus in the form of the torture of Cypriots who are fighting for their freedom. Despite the secrecy surrounding the subcommittee’s deliberations, according to an American source, it heard depositions from the Greek delegation regarding confirmed instances of these abuses by the British. SIR CHARLES SELTMAN: London, 29 – Sir Charles Seltman, an authority on Greek art and antiquities, died in Cambridge yesterday at the age of 72. Dr Seltman graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in archaeology and later became a professor there.
