SOLOMOS IN FRENCH: On the occasion of the exhibition on Dionysios Solomos that has been so successful and which has been extended until the middle of this month, the French Institute of Athens, which is organizing the exhibition, has issued a selection of Solomos’s Italian texts translated into French by Iosif Peretti, with a prologue by the institute’s director Octave Merlier. The small volume also includes obituaries to Markos Antonios Foskolos, to the Zakynthian scholar Spyridonas Gryparis, excerpts from other obituaries, the poet’s thoughts in various prose writings, which are in fact prose poems, and, finally, excerpts from unfinished works. The translation from the Italian to the French has been completed and will be invaluable to all those who were unable to enjoy the Italian originals. ERNST HEINKEL: The famous German aircraft builder Ernst Heinkel has died in Stuttgart after suffering a stroke at the age of 70. He founded what was to become a leading industrial firm in 1922, designing and building the first rocket-powered aircraft, and during World War II his factories employed 50,000 workers.
