A MONTH BEFORE THE VANDALISM: Istanbul, 8 - The Hurriyet newspaper has published the following report from Ankara: “Official circles in the Turkish capital are observing with great care and interest the stance taken by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the Orthodox Church on the Cyprus issue and are claiming that there is no place in Turkey for those who do not take a stand against hostile acts against the country.” SPYRIDOULA TORTURE CASE: The Piraeus public prosecutor, Mr Xenakis, has referred to the investigating magistrate the case of G.V. and his wife A., who have been charged with causing grievous bodily harm (by burning with an electric iron) to their servant, 13-year-old Spyridoula R. The couple requested a 24-hour delay before appearing and will face the magistrate today. (...) Meanwhile, thousands of people have besieged the Tzanneio Hospital where the girl is being treated, asking for information about her condition and offering their support. YIAROS: The Justice Ministry has confirmed a report that the first 200 communist convicts have been sent to the prison on the island of Yiaros along with 20 common criminals from the prison on Aegina. Transfers will continue from other prisons.
