Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

MARIA CALLAS: Tickets went on sale yesterday morning at the Athens Festival for the two performances to be given by Maria Meneghini Callas. From 5 a.m. a queue had formed outside the ticket office, where police officers handed out queue tickets at 6.30 a.m. At 9 a.m. tickets went on sale. Each person was allowed just four tickets. It is estimated that by the evening, 4,300 tickets had been sold for the 3,200-seat Herod Atticus Theater. For Callas’s first appearance, only a few tickets were left at 300, 220, 150 and 80 drachmas. All seats at 40 drachmas were sold out. For her second performance, about 400 tickets have been sold at 40 drachmas, and now only 300 and 100 drachma tickets are left. Sales continue today for the two performances, on August 1 and 6. SPYROS SAMARAS: This evening the National Opera’s summer season opens at the theater on Alexandras Avenue with an operetta by Spyros Samaras. FREDRIC MARCH: The actor Fredric March arrived at Athens Airport the day before yesterday, accompanied by his wife, the actress Florence Eldridge, and their daughter. They were met at the airport by Dimitris Horn and Dora Stratou.
