LAURIS NORSTAD: Air Marshal Lauris Norstad, 49, whom US President Dwight D. Eisenhower has appointed as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe, last visited Greece in June 1955, when he had talks with the then-defense minister, Mr Panayiotis Kanellopoulos, and representatives of the National Defense General Staff. President Eisenhower met Norstad during the North African campaign during World War II. Norstad is the first US air force official to be given a senior administrative post abroad, where he will lead major Allied forces and will need to have considerable diplomatic abilities in order to manage relations with the governments of other countries. SIXTH FLEET: The American Information Service has announced that an amphibious battalion belonging to the Sixth Fleet will visit three Greek ports during the last two weeks of April and the first week of May. YIAROS PRISONS: The justice minister, Mr Constantine Papaconstantinou, has made a statement emphasizing that the building on the island of Yiaros for 1,000 prisoners is in good condition and suitable for housing this number in sanitary conditions.
