Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

KARAMANLIS THE WINNER: The prime minister, Mr Constantine Karamanlis, addressed members of the press yesterday evening after Sunday’s parliamentary election, and made the following statement: “I feel deep satisfaction because the Greek people, with absolute understanding of the importance of the electoral struggle and the repercussions of a possible victory by our rivals who are working with the communists, have the National Radical Union (ERE) the majority and the power to proceed with carrying out its platform.” GEORGE PAPANDREOU: The leader of the Liberals, Mr George Papandreou, said yesterday that he would reply to the prime minister when the total number of votes were officially announced for each of the parties and alliances, in order to clarify in which of those the Greek people had actually declared their faith. Also remaining to be clarified, he said, was the influence of the military vote on the results of the election. (Ed. note: Eventually, the ERE party was awarded the majority of seats in Parliament even though it actually received fewer votes than the Democratic Union alliance.)
