An article published in Kathimerini English Edition on July 19 titled “Greeks are sure on Turkey but not EU,” states, “Some 70 percent of Greeks say they are against Turkey joining the EU.” However, in a landmark decision, the Greek government expressed its support for Turkey’s bid to join the EU ahead of a critical summit in Brussels last December.

During NATO’s bombing of Yugoslavia, over 90 percent of the Greek people were against the war against their Serbian Orthodox brothers and sisters. It would have taken only one vote to have prevented NATO bombs from dropping on innocent Serbian civilians and that vote should have come from the Greek government, but did not.

It appears that, regardless of how the Greek people vote, the Greek government’s position is that it, not the people, will decide what is best for them. 

Turkey is not in the EU but should it be able to join would it not be better to refer to it as the European-Anatolian Union?
