‘VIOLENCE THE ONLY WAY’: New York, 24 - The UN General Assembly has rejected the inclusion of the Cyprus issue on its agenda: 28 countries voted against, 22 in favor and 10 abstained. The Greek foreign minister, Mr Stephanos Stephanopoulos, foresaw that the outcome of this development would unfortunately be “violence as the only solution.” His speech, however, was not well received and it began to seem as though, once again, the die was cast for Greece and Cyprus. Meanwhile, there continue to be assurances from the Americans that while the Cyprus issue has been suppressed for the time being, it has definitely not been abandoned. US representative Henry Cabot Lodge Jr emphasized that the United States government would support a revival of the issue if circumstances once again dictated it. TURKEY AND CYPRUS: Nicosia, 23 - “There is no longer any question of Cyprus uniting with Greece. Turkey is determined, in the event that Great Britain withdraws from Cyprus, to occupy it at any cost,” said Turkish-Cypriot leader Fadil Kucuk.
