Selection: Michalis Katsigera

TO THE USA: (From a commentary in Kathimerini): Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Averof has completed his talks with US officials on the Cyprus issue. According to reports, the Greek minister drew the US government’s attention to the general dangers that the USA’s stance on the issue has created for the imminent debate in the UN’s political committee. That is, Greece did what it had to do and is now waiting to see how the USA will act. We would like to hope that the government in Washington will not resist the demand for self-determination, nor will it remain neutral. We hope that it will support the demand. Neutrality in matters of freedom naturally are unacceptable for people who wish to lead the world morally and politically. TO THE USSR: (From a commentary in Kathimerini): Moscow’s Isvestia newspaper writes that despite their different regimes and despite their different views on international issues, Athens and Moscow should benefit from their common interests to unite their efforts toward establishing peace and international cooperation. If the Soviet Union stops providing Greek communists with moral, political and economic support, it can be sure Greeks will appreciate it.
