When impunity spawns violence

Did we have to mourn a dead fan before we finally decided to do something about lawbreaking in this country?

Did a 25-year-old man have to lose his life in a violent clash between rival supporters before Greece’s political parties and the responsible state authorities decided to mobilize against violence both in and outside sport grounds?

The violent episodes that occurred yesterday were prompted by a relatively minor athletic event. Still, they had a very sad ending that must move Greek society and the state into action.

The problem of juvenile delinquency is a complex one. It is related to social problems but it also has to do with tolerance toward lawbreaking on all social strata.

The sad death of the youth revealed the dire social effects generated by impunity from violations of the law. We have to tackle the issue head on.
