Nothing short of an outrage

The system has worked beautifully once again. After the former managing director of Siemens Hellas, Michalis Christoforakos, fled to Germany in order to avoid testifying in the ongoing cash-for-contracts scandal, now another former Siemens executive, Christos Karavelas, has also taken refuge in Germany. Both know that Germany has a more flexible stance toward the criminal charges they face.

Understandably, Greeks are enraged by this development and have every right to know how the Greek justice system allowed another suspect to slip through the net. They also have every right to wonder whether this development indicates a plan to cover up the extent of the scandal and, if so, who is involved.

Karavelas’s disappearance may have come as a relief to certain people but it is provocative and suggestive. After the politicians suspected of being involved in the affair received immunity from trial due to the statute of limitations, we are now seeing other leading players in the scandal getting away, and this is nothing short of an outrage.
