Index reaches new year-low

The main Greek stock market index slid to its lowest point of the year yesterday as the local bourse performed even worse than other European markets. Turnover was high but only 29 stocks managed to register gains.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) closed at 3,143.92 points, a 2.44 percent decline from Thursday. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index lost 2.49 percent, falling to 1,726.77 points.

Experts believe the decline may well continue in the domestic market.

The only blue chip that gained ground yesterday was Titan cement (up 2.83 percent). Worst off were the stocks of Public Power Corporation (down 6.63 percent), Viohalco (5.78 percent), Bank of Cyprus (4.42 percent), Coca-Cola HBC (4.33 percent), Marfin Popular Bank (4.21 percent).

Turnover reached 256.4 million euros.
