Eco-friendly transport

EUROKINISI

Bicycles were parked outside the Transport Ministry yesterday as Transport Minister Costis Hatzidakis met with representatives of environmental groups to discuss transport issues. Hatzidakis heralded the creation of counter-flow bus lanes on busy roads in central Athens such as those currently operating on Panepistimiou Street. The measure is aimed at preventing taxi drivers and other motorists from overtaking buses on busy roads. Hatzidakis conceded that the policing of bus lanes could be better but that it was not possible to apprehend every single traffic offender. He also called on the groups to submit their own proposals on how to achieve more environmentally friendly transport methods.
