Contribution of Dimitris Papazisis (1926-2006)

Dimitris Papazisis left his mark on Athens in the form of many fine buildings, mostly erected in the 1950s and ’60s.

He came to prominence in 1961 through the office building he designed on Syntagma Square, on the corner of Ermou and Nikis streets, which, as Fessa-Emmanouil said, “raised a storm of protest because of its modernity.” He designed the interior in collaboration with Takis Zenetos.

Papazisis designed many other buildings, including the Commercial Bank (1958, Kolokotroni and Nikiou), detached houses, and many tasteful apartment blocks (such as those at the corner of Asclepiou and Diodotou, 12 Anagnostopoulou, 13 Tsami Karatassou, 7-9 Xanthippou, 3 Xanthippou and Deinocratous, 151 Patission and A. Meletiou). He was one of those low-profile practitioners of ’60s architecture who nevertheless left his stamp in the heart of Athens, opposite Parliament.
