Probing complaints about the European Union

European Ombudsman Nikiforos Diamandouros investigates complaints about maladministration in the institutions and bodies of the European Union, such as the European Commission, the Council of the EU and the European Parliament.

He is not in charge of national ombudsmen and does not handle appeals against their decisions. The right of access to EU documents and decisions, lack of transparency, complaints about the results of competitions for staff appointments or the supply of goods and services to the EU are some of the areas in which he takes action.

Seventy percent of the complaints submitted to Diamandouros fall within the scope of a national ombudsman, in which case his office forwards the file to the appropriate ombudsman.
