Change at top of judiciary

In an attempt to put behind it the controversy of recent months, the government yesterday approved the officials that will preside over Greece’s judicial system with the successor of Supreme Court prosecutor Giorgos Sanidas drawing particular attention.

Yiannis Tentes, who until yesterday had served as a judge, was named as Sanidas’s replacement. His appointment carries particular weight as Sanidas had courted considerable controversy recently over his handling of a number of cases including the Siemens bribery scandal and the Vatopedi land exchange.

Tentes is seen as a safe pair of hands due to his low profile and his non-dogmatic approach, sources said. His appointment did not draw any noticeable criticism from opposition parties, which had slammed Sanidas in the past.

The other key appointments were Giorgos Kalamidas as Supreme Court president and Panayiotis Pikrammenos as the head of the Council of State, Greece’s highest administrative court.
