Fishermen sail into Piraeus to protest

ORESTIS PANAGIOTOU/ANA

Dozens of fishermen used their boats to block the port of Piraeus yesterday to protest a European Union directive that will come into force next year, preventing them from fishing close to the coast and at a depth of less than 50 meters. The fishermen demand that the government arrange for them to be exempt from the rule. Ferry services were not seriously disrupted by the protest. A similar demonstration was held in Thessaloniki.
